Advanced Skiing in France
Posted May 13, 2011Most Alpine resorts have some black runs suitable only for skilled and experienced skiers and snowboarders. Every winter, some of the world’s best sportspeople choose to ski Meribel, Les Gets, and other French Alpine slopes. The snow is world class and so are the facilities. Winter sport was born in the Alps and they remain a global destination- nobody understands great skiing and great skiers like the French.
While the double and triple black runs near the chalets of Les Gets and the Portes du Soleil are not the very hardest in the world and they lack the untouched remoteness of Alaskan and Canadian slopes, their accessibility is actually a real virtue. In other places it can take a long time to get to the top of the toughest black slopes, but the ‘Yeti’ runs of Les Gets are superbly accessible. That means you can pack more serious skiing into every day of your holiday.
The French Alps may have one of the best and most extensive lift networks in the world, but there are plenty of opportunities for off-piste skiers too. Ski France and you’ll have access to helicopter transport and all the support facilities that serious off-piste snowboarders and skiers need, all close to first-class accommodation, restaurants, pubs, and clubs. The opportunities for Alpine climbers and ski mountaineers are incredible and these days many resorts have installed half-pipes, rails, and ramps too. Competitions are regularly held throughout the winter and there is plenty to challenge even the best skier.
