Val Thorens
Val Thorens Ski resort, the highest ski resort in Europe, is based high up in the Three Valley at 2300m. This high alititude ski resort offers possibly the most snow sure & longest ski season in France. Part of the Three Valleys ski area, the skiing here is world class and it's a ski area visited by most ski keens as part of their to-ski list. The skiing up here though is well above the tree line, with open bowls and off-piste galore. This does mean though that white-outs when it's snowing are common and it can be a cold place when the wind blows in January.
The nightlife in Val Thorens is lively and vibrant, always busy with people burning the midnight oil. For the younger skiier with energy to burn you'll find no shortage of night spots including the highest pub in Europe. This is no sleepy mountain resort!
The ski accommodation of Val Thorens is varied - hotels, chalet style hotels, catered chalets, self catered chalets and self catered apartments. It's mostly very practical being a high modern French ski resort, so it's been built with easy ski access to most areas of accomodations and ski lift running right through the resort itself. Indeed you can look out of many upper floor balconies to see people on ski lifts going right past!
Again with the normal theme of high French ski resorts Val Thorens is lively, has great skiing right on your door step & it's very practical with lots of ski in - ski out accomodation. Authenic, charming or traditional it is not! If you are looking for the picture postcard chalet village for a catered chalet holiday then you can alway try some of the lower ski resorts in the Three Valleys such as the catered chalets of Meribel or La Tania.
